Week 8 was very kind to me. Had to sweat out a lot of games that went down to the wire especially Leo’s Lock. But, as the late and great Yogi Berra said, “It ain’t over till it’s over” and, as Duke found out the hard way, sometimes it’s over but they forgot to tell the referees.

When the dust finally settled, I finished 12-4 and ran Leo’s Lock to a perfect 8-0. Went 2-2 against the spread in Leo’s Specials with a good call taking Temple and the points but was really off in taking under in the Clemson-NC State contest. Still, that added $320 to the kitty for a very respectable total of $1430 at the halfway mark of the season.

Let’s see if I can keep up that pace in Week 9.

NEBRASKA (+5 1/2) loses to Michigan State

Cornhuskers are having the year where if it wasn’t for bad luck, Big Red would have no luck.  If it can go wrong, it will go wrong in Lincoln. Michigan State is just the opposite. Sparty has the “Midas Touch” and everything is coming up roses for the guys from East Lansing. Don’t expect that to change. Spartans stay undefeated and on a collision course with Ohio State later in the season.

NORTH CAROLINA (-7 1/2) loses to Duke

This contest normally determines the ACC basketball title but, this year, the winner has a leg up on playing the winner of the Clemson-Florida State game this weekend in ACC Championship game in December in Charlotte. Look for the Blue Devils to be on a mission after they had one taken from them against Miami in Durham last Saturday on a terrible job of officiating. Tar Heels put up a fight but Dukies prevail in a close one.

INDIANA (+7) loses to Iowa

Hawkeyes are quietly moving up the ladder toward a showdown with OSU-MSU winner in Big Ten title game. Could be a battle of unbeaten and it should be. Hoosiers will score points and home game in Bloomington will be a big help. That’s the good news. Bad news is Iowa will score as well and it will be more than Indiana. Unbeaten season rolls on in Iowa City.

PITTSBURGH (+9) loses to Notre Dame

The only shot the Irish have to go to the playoffs is to win out and hope Clemson does the same. That way the only blemish on Notre Dame’s resume is a two-point loss in Death Valley in a game-long monsoon.  Golden Domers do their part with a big win over the Panthers in the Steel City.

New York Giants (-2 1/2) loses to TAMPA BAY

Yeah, this one looks like I lost my mind but lets look at one big stat. Giants are dead last in the NFL in sacks and Bucs offense is starting to jell. Bottom line is the QB that has the cleanest jersey at the end will be on the winning side. I say Eli Manning will be the dirtier signal-caller and that bodes well for Winston and Company. Buccaneers in an upset at Raymond James with a late field goal.

Tennessee (+2 1/2) loses to NEW ORLEANS

How can you go against the Saints, or should I say Drew Brees, after they hung 52 on the G-Men last week.  That’s easy because they game up 49 to New York. If Titans didn’t have Mariotta coming off a knee injury, having to play with a brace. I may have gone with the other side. Like New Orleans in a shoot out.

Florida State (+12) loses to CLEMSON
Vanderbilt (+21) loses to FLORIDA
EAST CAROLINA (-3 1/2) loses to South Florida
CENTRAL FLORIDA (+17) loses to Tulsa
BOSTON COLLEGE (+4) loses to North Carolina State
OKLAHOMA STATE (+4 1/2) loses to Texas Christian

PITTSBURGH (-4 1/2) loses to Oakland
St. Louis (+2) loses to MINNESOTA
SAN FRANCISCO (+7) loses to Atlanta
DALLAS (+2 1/2) loses to Philadelphia

Virginia at MIAMI-FL (-7)

Really have no idea what Miami team will show up. Will it be the Hurricanes that beat Duke or the Tropical Depressions that got blown out by Clemson costing Al Golden his job. I’m saying it’s the Hurricanes in their first home appearance of the post-Golden era and they beat the Cavaliers in Coral Gables by 10 with a close cover.

Louisiana State (+7) at ALABAMA

Does anyone in the world think this game will be decided by more than a touchdown? Take the points. Tide rolls but Bayou Tigers cover in Tuscaloosa. Enough said.

Jacksonville at NEW YORK JETS (42 1/2)

Neither team is an offensive juggernaut. Jaguars getting better but Jets defense is pretty good. New York’s offense still looking for a fully healthy QB. It’s a recipe for the under and I’ll take it.

Miami at BUFFALO (-3)

Miami traveling to Buffalo in November. Never a good time for the Fins to come north and this is no exception. Close game but Mother Nature and being at home worth at least a touchdown to the Bills. Lay the points.
