On Wednesday, The National Football League announced that Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston has been named NFC Offensive Player of the Week for Week One.  On Thursday, the NFL announced that Winston has been voted FedEx Air NFL Player of the Week for Week One as well.

His four touchdown passes are the second-most in an opening game in franchise history, while his passer rating is the third-highest and his 281 passing yards are the fourth-highest.

This is the second career FedEx Air Player of the Week Award for Winston, after winning the award in Week 11 of 2015.

Winston is the first player in team history to win both NFC Offensive Player of the Week and FedEx Air Player of the Week in the same week. Winston’s two FedEx Air Player of the Week awards are tied for the most in franchise history (also Josh Freeman).

The Week One contest marked the second time in Winston’s career he has thrown for at least four touchdown passes. In just 17 career games, he has become one of only four Buccaneers quarterbacks to have multiple games with four or more touchdowns, joining Brad Johnson (four such games in 49 games played), Steve DeBerg (two such games in 64 games played) and Doug Williams (two such games in 67 games played).

Winston is currently tied for the NFL lead with four touchdown passes, the first time a Buccaneers quarterback has held or tied for the NFL lead in passing touchdowns since Brad Johnson in Week 12 of 2003. Winston also ranks in the top 10 in the league in passer rating (122.6 – third), yards per attempt (8.52 – fifth) and completion percentage (69.7 – seventh).

Winston is the first Buccaneers player to earn NFC Offensive Player of the Week since running back Bobby Rainey in Week 11 of the 2013 season. He is the first Buccaneers quarterback to win the award since Josh Freeman did so twice in 2010 (Weeks Five & Nine). This is the third time in team history that the Buccaneers have won the NFC Offensive Player of the Week in Week One (also: Vinny Testaverde, 1989; Steve DeBerg, 1987).
