TAMPA SPORTS WEEK IN REVIEW – SEPTEMBER 6
By Leo Haggerty

TAMPA BAY SPORTS – 8/31 TO 9/7

Moving my weekly review of Tampa Bay Sports to Sunday.  That’s means the Poll Question will be relocated to Monday.

Below is “The Week That Was” in Tampa Bay Sports.  Enjoy.

LIGHTNING HOCKEY

MONDAY – W 3-2 2OT
Tampa Bay, with their fourth consecutive victory, eliminated Boston and moved on to the Eastern Conference Finals.  D Victor Hedman netted the game-winner at 14:10 of the second overtime.  Now the Bolts take on the winner between the Philadelphia Flyers and the New York Islanders.
ONE BIG THING – Have to go with The Big Cat again.  #88 is standing on his head stopping 45 of 47 shots with one of the markers being when the Bruins had the man advantage.  The other was the first even-strength goal that Vasilevskiy has allowed in the last three games.

NEXT GAME – MONDAY SEPTEMBER 7TH VS NEW YORK ISLANDERS

RAYS BASEBALL

SUNDAY – W 12-7
The Rays won their fifth consecutive contest.  Tampa Bay pitching staff posted consecutive shutouts in the first two games of the series in Miami but this win was due to an offensive explosion.  TB plated three runs in the 1st plus two in the 4th and dropped a seven-spot on the Marlins in the 5th for a 12-1 lead.
ONE BIG THING –  SS Willie Adames.  #1 hits a grand slam to put the game, for all intents and purposes, out of reach.  The Native of the Dominican Republic added another hit and scored another run for a very profitable day at the dish.

MONDAY – W 5-3
Tampa Bay extended its winning streak to six games by topping the Yankees in the Bronx.  The Rays jumped on NY ace Gerrit Cole for 2 in the 1st and singletons in the 2nd and 5th innings.  That was more than enough for TB pitchers.
ONE BIG THING – P Tyler GlastnowThe big righthander threw six shutout innings allowing two hits and striking out nine Bronx Bombers.  Enough said.

TUESDAY – L 5-3
The Rays win streak came to an end.  New York jumped to an early 2-0 lead only to see Tampa Bay tie it with deuce in the 5th. The Rays bullpen, that has been stellar over the last six games, imploded giving up 3 runs to the Yankees in the 6th and that was enough to seal the deal for NY.
ONE BIG THING – Masahiro Tanaka.  The Yanks stopper went six innings giving up two runs on three hits and fanning seven.  It was the performance the Yanks needed from their starting pitcher.

WEDNESDAY – W 5-2
The Rays wasted no time getting back on the winning track. Tampa Bay played long ball with two dingers in the 1st that plated 4 runs and added a solo shot in the 4th to sprint to a 5-0 advantage.  The Yanks got two back but it was too little and too late for the pin-stripers.
ONE BIG THING – 1st inning offensive explosion.  The Rays knocked New York starter Jordan Montgomery out in the opening frame with two-run homers by newly-acquired Randy Arozarena and Mike Brosseau.  That set the tone early for a TB victory.

FRIDAY – W 5-4
Tampa Bay won their ninth straight contest over Miami.  After falling behind 2-1, the Rays posted a 4-spot in their half of the 4th and the pitchers took over from there.
ONE BIG THING – Rays bullpen.  When the Marlins moved to 5-4 in the fifth, the Tampa Bay bullpen posted a four-inning shutout allowing only one hit over that span.

SATURDAY – L 7-3
Miami finally put an end to the Tampa Bay streak.  The Marlins put up 4 in the the 4th and another one in the 5th.  The Rays got a run back in their half of the 5th but Miami put the game out of reach with 2 in the 7th.
ONE BIG THING – Marlins Sandy Alcantara. The Miami started when 6 innings allowing just one run on three hits.

SUNDAY – W 5-4 10
The Marlins took a 4-3 lead in the 10th only to see the Rays charge bac k in their half of extras to claim the victory.  Ji-man Choi doubled to tie the score and then Brandon Lowe hit a walk-off sacrifice fly for the win.
ONE BIG THING – Randy Arozarena.  The Rays outfielder was 3-for-4 with two homers to get TB to extra innings.
