TAMPA BAY SPORTS WEEK IN REVIEW – OCTOBER 11

OCTOBER 5 TO OCTOBER 11

Another wild-and-crazy week on the Tampa Bay sports scene.  Hockey has finally concluded with the Lightning capturing their second Stanley Cup.  The Rays and Rowdies are smack-dab in the middle of their playoff runs and the Bucs are leading the National Football Conference South Division.  It’s good to be a fan in Tampa Bay.

Below is what transpired in the Bay area this week.  Enjoy.

RAYS

MONDAY L 9-3
Yanks go up 1-0.  New York erases a 3-2 Tampa Bay lead with a deuce in the 5th and break it open with five in the top of the 9th.
ONE BIG THING – DH Giancarlo Stanton.  #27 launched a Grand Salami to seal the deal.

TUESDAY W 7-5
Rays even the series at a game each.  TB never trailed and the bullpen held the Bronx Bombers to a single run over the last four innings.
ONE BIG THING – Tampa Bay going deep.  Rays hit four round-trippers as they out-power the Yankees.

WEDNESDAY W 8-4
Tampa Bay takes a 2-1 series lead.  The Rays explode from a 1-1 tie to sandwich a couple of three-run innings around a singleton in the 5th.
ONE BIG THING – TB Long Ball.  Rays go yard three more times with another impressive display of power.

THURSDAY L 5-1
NY stays alive and forces a win-or-go-home Game 5.  Yanks put up 2 in the 2nd and another couple for insurance in the 6th to even the series at 2 games apiece.
ONE BIG THING – Yankees pitching.  Four pin-stripe hurlers hold the Rays to one run.

FRIDAY W 2-1
Tampa Bay survives-and-advances with a some late-inning heroics.  Four Rays pitchers hold the Bronx Bombers to three hits and a single run as TB moves on to play Houston in the American League Championship Series..
ONE BIG THING – IB Mike Brosseau.  A late inning replacement #43 ran into a 100-mph Aroldis Chapman fast ball and deposited the horsehide in the left field seats for the winning margin.

SUNDAY W 2-1
Rays go up 1-0 in the ALCS.  After spotting Houston a 1st-inning run Tampa Bay comes back with singletons in the 4th and 5th and four relievers makes it stand up.
ONE BIG THING  – SP Matt Snell.  The lefty gets the win without his best stuff scattering six hits along with a couple of walks allowing only the Altuve dinger over 105-pitch five innings.

NEXT GAME – MONDAY VS HOUSTON ASTROS

BUCS

THURSDAY L 20-19
Bears come all the way back when former Buc Cairo Santos boots a 38 yard field with 1:13 left in the contest.  Chicago QB Nick Foles outduels Buccaneers signal-caller Tom Brady for the second straight time.
ONE BIG THING – Brady.  #12 appeared to lose track of the downs on the Pewter Pirates final drive.

NEXT GAME – SUNDAY VS GREEN BAY PACKERS 

ROWDIES

SATURDAY W 4-2
Tampa Bay breaks a 2-2 tie with a couple of goals in the 78th and 80th minute to best Birmingham.  Advance to the USL Eastern Conference Semifinals.
ONE BIG THING – Balanced scoring.  Tampa Bay get goals from four different players.

NEXT GAME – SATURDAY VS CHARLESTON BATTERY

BULLS 

SATURDAY l 44-24
ECU scores on their first four possessions.  The Pirates raced to a 31-17 halftime advantage and coasted in for their first American Athletic Conference win of 2020.
ONE BIG THING – Third down conversions.  USF was 5-of-13 and 0-for 3 on fourth down and East Carolina was 8-of-16 on third down and a perfect 2-for-2 on fourth down.

NEXT GAME – SATURDAY AT TEMPLE OWLS
