Ok, I will fully admit that I have NO information that can back up this hypothesis.  Just playing a hunch because I know the participants.

Yes, I know as you read below you will believe that I’m drawing one card to fill an inside straight.  With that being said, humor me with this “what if” supposition concerning the National Football League 2021 Draft as it applies to the 49ers.

Let me present the facts as they exist today.  San Francisco traded their #12 pick in the 2021 draft along with their 1st and 3rd round selections in  2022 plus their 1st round spot in 2023 to Miami to move up to the #3 slot in this year’s draft.

NFL analysts throughout the country have been trying to decipher why General Manager John Lynch made this move.  Some have surmised that he is targeting North Dakota State quarterback Trey Lance.  Others have prophesized that the 49ers moved up to select Alabama signal caller Mac Jones.  Still other have suggested that, after the Jaguars and the Jets have chosen a quarterback with the 1st and 2nd overall pick, they will be taking either one of the qb’s left and that would be Justin Fields from Ohio State or Zach Wilson from Brigham Young.

Not bad analysis but I believe old #47 may have some inside information that no one else possesses.  Now, humor me for a moment as I put forth this possible scenario.

With the first pick in the 2021 NFL draft, the Jacksonville Jaguars select Justin Fields from Ohio State.  New Head Coach Urban Meyer loves a mobile quarterback and the Buckeye star, who just happened to be at the last stop that the “Meyer coaching merry go round” came to rest, may be that guy.  Plus, and you cannot discount this possibility, Meyer always wants to be considered the “smartest guy in the room” and what better way to prove that than to take a player that most draft analysist believe is, at best, the third quarterback prospect.

Here’s where it gets interesting.  With the second pick in the 2021 NFL Draft, the New York Jets select Mac Jones.  After trading starting QB Sam Darnold to Carolina, new Jets Head Coach Robert Salah and General Manager Joe Douglas both agree that they want a winner to lead the Green & White.  What better choice than the signal caller of the undefeated national champions to take the reigns in The Big Apple.

So that takes us to the 49ers who have the third pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.  With the selection, Lynch will immediately take Clemson QB Trevor Lawrence and pencil in #16 as the San Fran quarterback for the next 10 years and probably longer.  This also makes the “City by the Bay” the prohibitive favorite to win the NFC West as well as going deep into the playoffs.

Well, there you have it.  Lynch moved up because he though there was a chance the “best quarterback in the draft” as well as a generational talent for a signal caller would fall to him at #3.

If this comes to fruition, the 49ers just put some major coins in the slot machine and hit the jackpot.  The only thing left to do is sit back and watch the proceedings on the evening of March 29th to see what transpires.  See you around the TV on Thursday night to see if I’m right.
