Game On…with Rob Kriete! – APRIL 28

I always thought it would be great to have a nice, simple Par 3 golf hole in my own backyard. Wouldn’t that be fun? Growing up in Canarsie, Brooklyn, we only had a postage-stamp-sized yard, but I still dreamed of playing, just the one hole, in my own yard. Happily, living in Riverview, I do have a putting green to putt around on. I think that counts, almost.

This week, in our proverbial backyard of Tampa, the Professional Golfer’s Association comes to the Innisbrook Resort in Palm Harbor, Florida. I love this tournament and missed it last year when it was canceled for Covid.

Paul Casey, who won the last two times this tournament was played in 2018 and 2019, returns to defend his title. Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson, and Justin Thomas are playing as well, and are among the 156 professionals planning to tee off on Thursday.

The beautiful golf course is great for fans to take in a uniquely quieted sporting event. Somehow, baseball players can hit a 100mph baseball with an entire stadium screaming, but in golf, silence is mandatory for hitting a golf ball. And, I love this irony. If you have never experienced a crowd “where you can hear a pin drop” and then suddenly erupts from a great shot is bucket list.  I encourage you to attend the Valspar Championship, or another PGA event in your “back yard.”

There may not be PGA-style eruptions when I finally sink a 30-foot putt in my actual yard, but my beloved dog Mookie shows his approval with a vigorously wagging tail!

I hope to see you this weekend at the Valspar Championship!

Be safe, everyone!
